Covering the Basics of Windows 7

As Microsoft gets ready to officially unveil Windows 7, the interest in what this new operating system has to offer IT departments is rising.

In a Windows 7 and Hyper-V Deep Dive webinar presented by Microsoft, the major new elements of Windows 7 are highlighted.

Despite the name of the event, there’s almost nothing in here about Hyper-V virtualization and Windows 7. What is provided is an overview of Windows 7 similar to previous Microsoft webinars on the subject.

Topics covered here include how Direct Access technologies eliminate the need for virtual private networks (VPN), the role of Network Access Protection (NAP) and how Branch Cache technologies work to optimize performance over wide area networks.

In addition, Microsoft’s approach to encryption with BitLocker and application security with AppLocker are discussed alongside the need for IPv6 and 64-bit servers. There’s also a brief discussion of how terminal services, now known as Remote Desktop Services, works and a quick look at the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit.
