There’s no doubt that Microsoft SharePoint has become one of the most widely used document management systems in the world, but this webinar from AvePoint might make anybody think twice about joining the ranks of SharePoint customers.
In a 60-minute webinar, called SharePoint and Compliance Regulations – The Rules and How to Avoid Violating Them that was hosted on TechWeb, AvePoint spends the first 30 minutes or so reminding customers about all the things that are basically wrong with SharePoint. Obviously, AvePoint makes a DocAve software platform that solves many of the ills of SharePoint, but any Microsoft competitor could just as easily point customer’s to this webinar as a primary reason not to buy SharePoint in the first place.
In the second half of the webinar, AvePoint product marketing manager Mary Leigh Mackie does a credible job of delivering a standard product pitch that highlights a set of SharePoint management tools that are probably sorely needed by any SharePoint site dealing with a document management system that is notorious for being cumbersome to use and difficult to manage.
Perhaps the most telling part of the webinar in that regard was when the audience was polled about whether their SharePoint system could be used to effectively respond to a legal or regulatory inquiry. Thirty percent of the audience said no, while another 40 percent said they didn’t know.
That would suggest that most SharePoint implementations have basically become electronic versions of a proverbial stuffed filing cabinet.
