As the amount of data that needs to be managed continues to grow exponentially, it comes as no surprise that that backup and recovery process is under a massive amount of pressure. Not only do IT organizations need a way to backup data faster, they also need a more cost-efficient approach in order to lower costs in these difficult economic times.
In an Evaluating Disk Backup with Deduplication: Case Studies and Industry Information from the Frontline webinar sponsored by ExaGrid Systems, the value of combining deduplication software with disk-based backup systems is outlined.
There’s not much here in terms of actual reports from the frontline based on the first-hand experience of an actual customer. But if knowing a lot of people have the same problem gives you comfort, then research data from The InfoPro might be of some interest. About 27 percent of the Fortune 1000 companies surveyed by The InfoPro have implemented data deduplication and another 40 percent are in some stage of rolling it out. The vast majority of those projects involve archiving data, particularly electronic mail and unstructured file content.
The rest of the event focuses on ExaGrid approach to data deduplication on disk-based system by relying on a post-processing approach combined with on storing delta changes to the actual data. But if you need a more in-depth understanding of the various approaches to data deduplication, you may need to check out this webinar event for more information.
The webinar concludes with some examples of how a hospital and a restaurant chain are relying on disk-based backup systems to close their backup windows. And finally, one real tangible piece of advice worth remembering actually comes from the event moderator Michael Krieger, who reminds people that data deduplication and encrypted data can easily result in a wasted effort.
